AGARTALA, April 28 (TIWN): One day National seminar on Sensitization on application of Jute GeoTextile (JGT) in Civil Engineering Constructions was held at Pragna Bhawan on Tuesday. Among the dignitaries, Professor Subimal Sen, President FOSET, Dr. S.Gupta, IAS, Jute Commissioner, Government of India, Professor S. Bhowmik, Chairman, IE (I) Tripura State Centre and others were present at the Dias. Though Chief Minister and Minister Badal Chowdhury were invited as Chief Guest and Special Guest, but due to some work they were not able to attend the seminar.

Delivering the address, Dr. S.Gupta, IAS, Jute Commissioner, Government of India told that, Jute Geotextile is a class of Technical Textiles under GEOTECH category. It is the natural variant of geotextiles. For years jute has been known as a material for flexible packaging. Jute industry happens to be the oldest surviving agro industry in the world.

Professor S. Bhowmik, Chairman, IE (I) Tripura State Centre while stressing on the topic told that, use of Jute Geotextile in erosion control has been known for decades and is a globally accepted concept. Slopes that are vulnerable to erosion can be overlain by open weave JGT to reduce the velocity of surface run-off the rains and entrap the detached soil particles within its pores.

It is to be mention that JGT is now being increasingly used for road construction. The purpose is to strengthen the road subgrade for ensuring both economy in construction and longer life of the pavement. Besides that Jute Geotextile can add to the stability of road and railway embarkments also.

However, JGT has also proved effective in controlling erosion of river banks also. Currently an international project on JGT with the major funding by the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), a financial institution under the UN with support from the Governments of India and Bangladesh is in progress. The project with a total of 26 fields trials spreads over the two countries (16 in India and 10 in Bangladesh) will end in June 2016.
