Earthquake: One dead, two injured and buildings developed crack in Tripura

AGARTALA, April 26 (TIWN): A middle aged housewife died in cardiac arrest and two school children fell ill out of fear in consequences of high intensity earthquake rocked Tripura on Saturday.

Local meteorology department officials stated that two moderate intensity shakes were felt in Tripura on Sunday. The magnitude of the tremors was recorded at 4.5 and 5.6 at 10.28 am and 12.48 pm respectively in the state.

“These are aftershocks of high intensity earthquake in Nepal region. After any major shake, it follows a few more aftershocks to settle the earth and positioning of deep earth plates. However, there is no loss or causality reported yet,” said Geological Survey of India officials.

According to report, about 50 newly constructed public buildings includes one in the most prestigious school of Agartala – Netaji Vidyaniketan have developed cracked in two subsequent tremors hits Tripura in 24 minutes interval on Saturday.

However, there is no report of any serious damage of property and collapse of building.

Police report said a housewife identified as Krishna Sinha (35) of Betcherra village under Kumarghat sub-division in North Tripura died immediately after earthquake.

“Krishna was alone in the house when tremor hits the state. She felt greediness developed during earthquake. She was rushed to well and try to get cold bath but collapsed there,” report stated.

The neighbours had shifted her to 82 Mile hospital. Doctors attending her declared dead.

On the other, two boys of Netaji Vidyaniketan were injured when trying to come out from the class room getting quake alarm. Both of them were sent home after first aid in the school, said a school teacher.

“The Students of the schools and colleges in Agartala run to take shelter in the campus identified by the disaster management authority during mock drill of earthquake,” said Tripura State Disaster Management unit In-charge and Deputy Secretary, Revenue Shankar Chakraborty.
