AGARTALA, April 22 (TIWN): Overnight seasonal cyclonic rains and thunder storms disrupted the transport movement at Assam-Agartala national highway road, the state’s main lifeline. The rain accompanied by a thunder storm on Tuesday night has uprooted couple of giant shaped trees and electric poles and fell on the road.Hundreds of trucks have been stranded after the incident occurred at Atahromura area due to the heavy rain accompanied by a thunder storm. It has been learnt that the incident took place on Tuesday mid-night amidst heavy downpours which is apprehended to continue for the next few days.A long queue of trucks and buses were stranded with their passengers on both sides of the area leading the transportation system paralysed. However it is to be mentioned here that The deplorable condition of National Highway 44 – the only road connectivity that links mainland India with the eastern part of Meghalaya, Barak Valley in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura – has for a long time now remained a harrowing experience for helpless commuters. The long stretch of the NH-44 is in its worst ever condition with vehicle breakdown all along the road becoming a daily trend, thereby causing heavy traffic jam for hours at a stretch.

The bad road condition also poses tremendous dangers to pedestrians and villagers who live on either side of the highway.

On many occasions, pedestrians have reportedly been injured with stone chips hitting them, as vehicles pass by.
