Tripura: National Initiative on Fodder Technology Demonstration implemented

AGARTALA, April 10 (TIWN): National Initiative on Fodder Technology Demonstration (NIFTD) was implemented by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chebri across the undivided West Tripura district. The NIFTD is a collaborative project launched by Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute (IGFRI), Jhansi way back in September, 2013.

The project activities of the KVK were looked after by Dr. Nurul Islam, SMS-Animal Science and Dipankar Dey, SMS-Soil Science as Co-PI. The major objective of the NIFTD is to accelerate fodder production through comprehensive fodder production, conservation and utilization, development of seed and planting material bank and establishing linkages with different players in fodder production and utilization.

The project is operated in extension research mode following cluster approach and fodder village model. In connection with the project, cluster demonstration of Oat, Barseem, Fodder Maize, Cowpea, Rice bean, Guinea, Para and NappierBajra Hybrid was done at KVK demonstration farm as well as farmer’s field during last two Rabi season and one Kharif season. Village clusters were East Ramchandraghat, Kamal Nagar, Ghilatali, West Ganki and North Chebri under Khowai sub division. Seed and rooted slips were also produced at KVK and farmer’s field which will be utilized for further demonstration. Under this project, Milk production of cow was increased upto 28-32% and health of the cattle was better than earlier.

 Several training, group discussion, field visits were made in connection of the project and one field day on fodder was organised at Kamalnagar village recently. Initially farmers were reluctant to spare cultivable land for fodder production but realizing the benefit of fodder in enhancing livestock productivity, they become interested to grow fodder of their own. Better outcome is expected during the coming years which are necessary for better productivity of livestock and well as agriculture. The information was provided by a NIFTD official.
