4 Leopards death : Veterinary experts to visit state on April first week to review Sepahijala zoo situation

AGARTALA, March 30 (TIWN): Guwahati based veterinary expert Dr. Apurba Chakroborty is likely to visit here at the state to review the situation of the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. Besides, according to the sources the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary authority was recently asked to upgrade the 25 years old infrastructure at the earliest to provide a healthy environment to the existing animals at the zoo.According to the sources from the Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary, the state government has urged the central govt. for allocation of an amount to the tune of Rs. 25 crore. The govt. is yet to response from the center.

The state govt. has recently allocated an amount of Rs. 10 lakh to upgrade the hospital in the wildlife sanctuary at Sepahijala. It is to be mentioned here that the Principal secretary on Saturday visited to the wildlife sanctuary following the death of four clouded leopards and later on convened a meeting with the officials of the Animal Resources Department and Wildlife Warden.

Asked about the status of the wildlife sanctuary, Sepahijala DM Parshant Kumar Goyal told to TIWN that at present the situation is normal and all preventive measured has been taken now to restrict further effect to other animals due to the virus that lead to a death of 4 clouded leopards at the wildlife sanctuary.

At present, the sanctuary consisted of as total of 535 animals belonging to a total of 34 species. Besides, it is worthy to be mentioned here that a total of four common leopards have died in Tripura's Sepahijala wildlife zoo and sanctuary recently due to Felina babesiosis, a tick-borne malaria-like illness. While on the other Bannerghatta Zoo and National Park in Bangaluru and Tripura's Sepahijala Zoo is also expected to exchange animals very soon. In exchange, Sepahijala zoo would provide to Bannerghatta zoo a pair of spectacle monkeys, three pig-tailed monkeys and two Asiatic bears.

Last year Visakhapatnam's Indira Gandhi Zoological Park and the Sepahijala Zoo had also exchanged animals. Sepahijala Zoo, 25 km south of the state capital, is one of India's 22 large zoos. This is the only zoo in India located within a wildlife sanctuary, the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. A portion of the sanctuary was also declared Clouded Leopard National Park.
