Crimes against women take a toll in Tripura: Opposition leader Sudip Barman blames govt.

AGARTALA, February 20 (TIWN): Talking tough on rising rate of crimes against women in Tripura, the opposition leader (MLA) Sudip Roy Barman during the assembly session on Thrusday launched a stern attack on the State Govt. “the State govt. has absolutely failed to bring a control over the rising rate of crimes against women in the state, while the police acting on behest of the left front govt. here remains backtrack from arresting the culprits”, Barman alleged today. It is mentionable here that during the year the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Chief secretary and DGP of Tripura on a a complaint that incidents of crime against women, including rape, murder, molestation, torture for dowry, sexual harassment at workplace were on a rise in the state.

“Tripura stands tall with the keep in trend of the increasing rate of crimes against women” opposition leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleged today addressing his speech during the assembly session. Making a stern attack on the left front govt. here today, Barman alleged that the failure to bring control over the crimes against women in Tripura has come up with the police acting on behest of the state govt. has been remaining back track from arresting the culprits involved with the crimes. Barman alleged that the police here have been found in long run to save their govt. in regard of the crimes.

Adding to that Barman today stated that one must be ashamed who always stands besides the accused person in regard of every crime that occurs against the women of the state. Besides, is much shameful that when the police inspite of arresting the culprits involved with the crimes, act on behest of the state govt. by leading the accused person to get a bail from the court, Barman stated. However, earlier during the year 2014 the NHRC press release complaint alleged that Tripura had become a safe heaven for women trafficking and that even at workplace women could not work with dignity. The guidelines of the Supreme Court laid down in Visakha case had not been implemented in Tripura

According to the Crimes in India 2013 report published by National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB), Tripura had registered 1628 cases of various crimes against women during 2013. Of these cases of cruelty by husbands and other relatives were the highest at 827, followed by 233 cases of rape, 124 cases of kidnapping and abduction and 29 cases of dowry-related deaths.

When the crimes against women had already taken a top most position in Tripura, the state govt. has taken certain steps to curb it, like recruitment of more women police and setting up more women police station. But all these seem to have bowed down in front of the increasing rate of crimes against women in Tripura. Therefore to mention here, organising seminars, workshops and awareness camp and recruiting more women police on curbing the rising crimes against women must not be enough here in the state at present because the way it has taken a giant shape, it is possible to curb the crimes related to women only when the police awake from their sleep and takes necessary steps against the accused.
