AGARTALA, Dec 30 (TIWN): Anjel Chakma’s (24) death has sparked protests, resentments in Tripura. He was brutally murdered due to racial hatred by a group of young people in Dehradun and now the call for justice for slain Anjel Chakma has reached beyond Tripura and the National Congress party expressed concerns, slamming the hate crime. Tripura opposition leader Jiten Chowdhury who is also the state secretary of the CPI-M party condemned the incident, appealing to stop racism against Northeast tribals.
“Anjel Chakma was a bright young man from Tripura. He was with his brother Michael Chakma when some hooligans attacked them and Anjel Chakma was stabbed on his back. He died on December 26.My condolences go out to the family of Anjel Chakma," said Chowdhury.
Chowdhury alleged, under BJP rule such racial attacks have increased nationwide. He cited examples since 2014’s Arunachal Pradesh’s 20-year-old Nido Taniam’s murder to various others attacks on residents of Mizoram, Tripura.
“They are targeting the Northeast people, for looking at different, different food cultures and languages. They are abused by calling Chinese, Chinkey, Nepali. It has surpassed universities, college campuses. It’s all happening under the call for BJP’s module for Hindu rashtra,” said Chowdhury citing another recent example from Assam, where attackers added “jai shri ram” and “Chinese go back” slogans.
