AGARTALA, Aug 20 (TIWN): A small businessman in Jampuijala's remote hilly area is struggling with exorbitant electricity bills after installing a smart meter. Hiron Miya, a resident of Pramodnagar's Muslim Para, received a bill of Rs 5,380 in June, which was a shocking amount for him. When he approached the Bishramganj Electric Office, he was told that the bill was high due to pending payments and was advised to submit a written application.
However, the situation took a bizarre turn when Hiron Miya received a bill of just Rs 4 for the period between August 14 and August 28. He is now questioning the accuracy of the smart meter and the billing system. Hiron Miya has appealed to the electricity department to reconsider the smart meter installation and revert to the old metering system.
Many residents in Tripura are facing similar issues with smart meters, with some receiving "ghost bills" that are either excessively high or inexplicably low. The problem has become a significant concern, with people expressing frustration over the lack of transparency and accuracy in the billing system.
