KAILASHAHAR, Aug 3 (TIWN): Three elephant tusks were seized on Sunday by Kailashahar police with the help of the forest department in the Arvind Nagar Sonapur area of Khaorabil Gram Panchayat area under Gaurnagar block.
Based on information received from confidential sources, a police team led by Kailashahar Subdivision Police Officer Jayant Karmakar conducted a search at the house of accused Mayub Ali, an electrician by profession. However the information was not about elephant tusks but it was said that drugs were stored in the home.
Accordingly, the police initially suspected that narcotics were stored in the house. But during the search in the cupboard of the house, the police found three elephant tusks.
After discovering these elephant tusks, police informed the forest department was immediately. On receiving the information, a team of the forest department led by range officer Subhankar Biswas reached the spot and recovered three teeth.
A forest department official said that the recovered teeth will be sent for forensic examination.
The owner of the house, Mayub Ali, is absconding and has not been arrested yet. Range officer Subhankar Biswas said that strict action will be taken against Mayub Ali as per the forest law.
The forest department and police administration have warned of taking strict action against those involved in illegally preserving and trafficking wildlife parts.
