AGARTALA, July 18 (TIWN): BJP is now straightforwardly signaling that, either with or without alliance partners, it is ready to test its strength alone in the ADC elections. The party has been in an alliance with the IPFT and Tipra Motha parties, which played crucial roles in sharing the tribal votebank. However, this time, the scene has changed, and Tipra Motha, despite having cabinet posts and family members in Parliament, continues to challenge deals before each local-level election.
On Thursday, the BJP, in the presence of CM Dr. Manik Saha, held the 2026 ADC poll's initial meeting, amid massive celebrations and featuring tribal cultural songs and dances. The two prominent faces, Rebati Tripura, former MP, and Rampada Jamatia, former Minister, attended and led the meeting.
Despite being stripped of their respective positions – Rebati Tripura's MP nomination went to a new candidate based on regional forum recommendations, and Rampada Jamatia was not given a ministry due to a crowded field of aspirants – both leaders have remained committed to the party. Notably, they had initially opposed Tipra Motha's inclusion in the BJP.
With the BJP now focusing on its own strength, leaders like Rebati Tripura and Rampada Jamatia, who have clean images and significant contributions to the party, are poised to take the lead in the upcoming campaign. Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma is also playing a key role, although his image has been affected by allegations of misusing government funds for personal projects.
Rebati Tripura, a former teacher with a humble background, and Rampada Jamatia, who has long been associated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad before joining politics, are expected to drive the party's campaign efforts in the ADC polls.
