AGARTALA, July 15 (TIWN): Tripura CPI-M party accused the state BJP Govt of a 100% tax hike in the water supplies to the households. Addressing a press meet on Tuesday, the leader of the opposition, Jiten Chowdhury, said, the water supply taxes that was Rs. 30 per unit in 2017, is now hundred percent. “It was made Rs. 40 to Rs. 30 initially, and now it has risen to Rs. 60! It’s a 100% rise and the old connections, which have yet to be registered officially for them a 50% rise imposed to get registered,” said Chowdhury.
“Strange, the businessmen who include the ice cream factory owners won’t have to pay the hiked taxes. It means the BJP government is not against the people who are making profits out of it, but the common men have to bear all the tax burdens,” he said.
“The decision was taken on 8th May during a Jal Board meeting in the presence of CM Dr. Manik Saha, but it was kept secret, and now it's being imposed from 1st July, which is unethical,” Chowdhury told the media.
He said, CPI-M will stage a protest statewide against such decisions of the BJP government, demanding the lifting of hikes in taxes on electricity and water, and if the government remains unmoved, the movement will be larger in the next steps.
