AGARTALA, July 13 (TIWN): Right now, Agartala City has 51 Wards, and there are 49 Gram Panchayats at the outskirts of Agartala. A proposal was made to expand Agartala city by elevating the panchayats into municipality areas. However, the matter is under review. Talking to the media, Agartala Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder said, “The city expansion plan was proposed in a meeting which was chaired by the chief minister himself. To work on the Larger Agartala, AMC also held a meeting with its corporators and officials yesterday.”

“Right now, we have been reviewing the plan and proposal. The matter will also be brought before the public. Once the decision is made, the issue will be taken to the Central Govt for permission,” said the Mayor.

“Our target is to foresee the next 20 years of Agartala and to plan accordingly so that people get all the benefits that they deserve to live here even after 20 years,” said Mayor.

“Earlier, there was no such city planning, but now we are trying to create a master plan,” he said. “It will take time, though. There is a map to include 49 gram panchayats with the existing 51 wards in Agartala, but the ultimate decision will be taken only after review.”

“All planning for future colleges, transport, including Metros will be a part of the plan,” he added.

The mayor also assured that the newly planned areas will always keep spaces for future planning, as right now, “nothing new can be installed due to spaceless constructions across the city.”

Usha Bazar, areas up to Majlishpur, Badharghat to Surjamanagar areas have been included in the larger-Agartala road mapping plan, the Mayor told TIWN.
