Sonamura, June 27 (TIWN): A 21-year-old youth named Subrata Debbarma was apprehended by villagers for stealing from a woman's shop in the Durlav Narayan area. The incident occurred on the day of the Rath Yatra festival, causing a stir in the local community. Subrata, allegedly addicted to cough syrup, confessed to resorting to theft to fund his habit.
According to eyewitnesses, Subrata was caught by the shop owner while attempting to flee with stolen cash. The villagers gathered, tied him to a tree, and eventually handed him over to the Sonamura police station. During interrogation, Subrata revealed that he consumes cough syrup at Zahir Mia's residence near Madhuban College and sells stolen goods to him.
The police are now investigating the matter and considering further action against Subrata and potential accomplices. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of substance abuse and its consequences in local communities.
