AGARTALA, Feb 8 (TIWN): A new law under the Modi Government aimed at removing the Chief Justice of India from the Chief Election Commissioner selection committee has been accused by the Congress of violating the constitutional rules. Congress National leader Ajay Singh Yadav, who reached Tripura on Saturday and addressed a press meet, called the move “unconstitutional”, saying the BJP Government is doing this to do anything they wish for the upcoming elections.
Congress National leader Ajay Singh Yadav addressed a press meet in Agartala.
The Supreme Court listed the matter for hearing on February 12, citing the pleas challenging the constitutionality of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023, which removed the Chief Justice of India from the selection panel appointing Election Commissioners (ECs).
Addressing media at Congress Bhawan, Post Office Chowmuhani, in Agartala, Ajay Singh Yadav said, "All the independent, constitutional organizations have been attempted to be taken under BJP Govt."
"So far the Chief Justice of India was a member of the Chief Election Commission's selection process, but now, the BJP Govt has amended the law and removed the Chief Justice. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi raised the issue in the parliament," Yadav said.
"The question is, why was the Chief Justice of India removed from the selection committee ? CJI was removed so that the Chief Election Commission can be elected as per the choice of them (BJP)," added Yadav.
"This is an insult of the constitution as well as the judiciary.........." he added.
