AGARTALA, Dec 24 (TIWN): Ending a 30-year-long deprivation, a government employee's widow has received justice after the High Court directed the Tripura government to clear the pending Group Insurance Money. Senior Advocate Prashanta Kumar Pal stated, "It is the end of a long, illegal deprivation for government employees, thanks to the intervention of the Tripura High Court. Many government employees face deprivation due to the negligence of certain officials."
Pal explained that a government employee, Muhammad Salil Mia, who died in 2021, had a group insurance scheme beneficiary that started in 1984. However, his family was deprived of the benefits for 30 years since he died.
"After a long deprivation, the widow, Arjuna Begum, received her family pension but was denied the group insurance money, which amounts to Rs. 1.50 lakh," Pal said.
"Despite approaching several officials, including the Director and Secretary of the department, she was told that she was not eligible for the group insurance money since it was not recorded in her late husband’s service record."
“Even though the officials claimed so, it was seen Rs.2,800 was deducted from the account. This forced the woman to file a petition in the High Court,” Pal said.
“First an advocate notice was served to the officers but they dismissed the advocate's notice. . The long deprivation occurred due to negligence, as officials failed to read the files and blindly followed suggestions from lower-level officials. If the officials could read the file, things could be different. Because they did not read open the file they could not know what was written in the documents, or what the group insurance said in the record. As a result, many government employees are deprived. That’s why all officials should read files,” he said
“However, the woman then approached the High Court and Justice Amar Nath Goura ordered the government to clear all pending amounts including group insurance money of Rs. 1.5 lakh within 2 months,” he said.
The case was filed in 2024 by widow Arjuna Begum against Tripura Government Education department officials and now after a long 30 years, the woman received justice.
