AGARTALA, April 13 (TIWN): The traditional “Charak” mela was observed in Agartala and other subdivisions of Tripura.
On the occasion of Sankranti, which is organized one day ahead of Bengali new year “Poyla Boishakh” the festival was observed.
In Pratapgrah English Medium school ground, thousands of people gathered to enjoy the year-ending festival. This is the 76th Charak fair in that location.
Charak fair is an age-old traditional festival where people devote themselves with “violent” testimony before God to prove their love. However, the violent activities include standing on chopper, making holes in body’s parts including face etc.
A cut tree is kept in the middle of the fair field and some people are hooked with sharp equipment on their backrest and then they are hanged with the tree.
Amid controversy remain with the violent display of festival, but people celebrate on the occasion. Centering the festival, small scale businessman earn profit by opening temporary stalls in the fair ground.
