AGARTALA, Nov 10 (TIWN): Two senior citizens who dedicated their whole lives teaching moral values to students, yet to retire from the noble profession seeing the students in trouble due to ‘teachers’ shortage’. When ‘Nipun Tripura’ like projects failed to bring major changes to the education system especially in the rural Tripura, two retired teachers at West Goklulnagar School said, they are pleased to be a part of the system even after retirement. The school has only 5 teachers with a strength of 216.
“I spent life’s 34 years in this profession. Out of love for the children, I am coming to the school even after retirement. For rest, I have the rest of my life. As soon as more teachers will be appointed, we will vacate the place for them”, said Swatswai Bhattacharjee.
“You may think, students' numbers are low. But in teaching, the ratio is not the calculation because a teacher can’t teach multiple subjects at a time”, she added.
Amid the rising demand for increasing the retirement age, the spirit of the teachers raised the question of whether 60 years is really a deserving period for retirement.
Talking to an on-duty school teacher, she said, “We need at least 10 to 12 teachers in this school. But now we have only 5 teachers, and out of them, two are on deputation”.
