AGARTALA, June 25 (TIWN): Access to Free Education has been the Fundamental right of all Indian children especially those who are studying in Govt schools, but in Tripura Vidyajyoti project was introduced in 2021-22 imposing thousand rupees fees on the students in Govt school, converting the Tripura Board of Secondary (TBSE) Schools into CBSE. On 2022, January 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this Vidyajyoti project dedicating a hundred schools under the mission at an investment of five hundred crores and later another fifty schools were added to the mission. In total one-hundred-and-fifty schools are now under this Vidyajyoti mission. But after two years of the project, development in the school system and infrastructure are invisible.

Either it’s about the numbers of subject-teachers in many of Vidyajyoti schools or school infrastructure; either it’s class room or mid-day-meal kitchen—no change is much visible and that has fuelled the controversy over the utilization of the seven-hundred-fifty crores Central Funds and thousand rupees fees collected from the students. That time Education Minister was Ratan Lal Nath, who has been replaced in 2023 after BJP had formed its Govt for second time.

Occasionally some classrooms are inaugurated by CM, Ministers with media hypes but they can’t reach up to the level of expectance that was given during the inauguration of the Vidyajyoti project on 2022, January 4.

Opposition parties launched protests during the launching of Vidyajyoti as it was imposing “fees” on students contradicting the constitutional right to Education.

On June 6, 2023, the opposition leader Animesh Debbarma raised questions over Vidyajyoti projects saying, nothing was done to develop the infrastructure and that in case of computerization, old computers were shown and that can never change the system.

“Initially it was 100 schools for which 500 crores were assured to be given and then more 50 school were added. It means a total Rs. 750 was the expenditure but where is the outcome. I want to ask, where is a sign in any of those schools that Rs. 750 crore was invested ? In which school such development was brought where Rs. 750 crore’s glimpse can be seen. Not to me, I appeal the Govt to answer it to the public”, said Animesh Debbarma.

Also Vidyajyoti project is not taking the initiative to recruit more numbers of subject teachers, physical education teachers and running the art/extracurricular classes with temporary teachers.

Who will do a personal analysis of each student’s report card? Such questions are being raised. Also, this project failed to provide each student special attention to uplift them from their weakness in particular subjects or areas.
