AGARTALA, June 14 (TIWN): Tear gas, water cannon were used by police to stop Tipra Motha student wing Tipra Indigenous Students Federation (TISF) protest on Wednesday who were demonstrating to go to Raj Bhawan with their demand for Roman Script for Kokborok language. The agitators had blockaded the VIP road at Circuit House since morning. As they were not vacating the place, at last police had to use tear gas, water cannon to control the situation. Talking to media, the agitators said that they were in peaceful protest but still police organized attacks on them. Some of the agitators were injured and taken to hospital. “We will not stop until our demands are kept. We want Roman script for Kokborok language and unless we get it, we will not give up”, said a woman agitator.
Tipra Motha party’s student wing Tipra Indigenous Students Federation protested with a long pending demand that is to launch Kokborok script in Roman alphabet. The youths gathered at Astabal stadium at a large number and protested for hours amid the scorching summer. They wanted to conduct a Raj Bhawan Abhijan in this regard but were stopped from doing so, led them to sit on road at Circuit house.
Talking to media, Ananta Debbarma said, “For 50 years Tiprasa community has been protesting seeking Roman script for Kokborok language. All Northeast states have their own language but in Tripura Tiprasa language is lagging beside. We demand our rights and we demand that Kokborok should be in English (Roman) language”.
Tipra Motha leaders have been with the injured students in the hospital.
