AGARTALA, March 7 (TIWN): Independent candidate of 7-Ramnagar Adv Purushottom Roy Barman has condemned the ongoing violence in Tripura that had started since the poll result declaration on March 2nd. Purushottom Roy Barman was an independent candidate from Ramnagar constituency, supported by Left and Congress but he was defeated by BJP MLA Surajit Datta with 890 votes’ margin.

Reacting to the ongoing post-result violence, Roy Barman said, “We thought Election Commission will take appropriate action to control violence just like the Commission acted before the Election but so far at least thousand violence incidents has been operated in Tripura by miscreants. Tomorrow is oath-taking, Chief Minister had assured to take total control of the law and order situation but the reality is just unfortunate. We have accepted our defeat. I have accepted my defeat with a margin of 890 votes but can’t accept the ongoing massive violence, extortion and tortures on voters”.

“Not only houses are attacked, but extortions are going on. When exams are underway, books and copies of students are burnt. Fire incidents gripped the state. The situation is alarming !”, said Purushottom Roy Barman.

“We demand that the Govt should take immediate action to control the violence. Even the BJP has said that the party wants peace. So my request to them is to take action against the miscreants. So far no action was taken in many cases. Police must take strict control over the situation”, he said.

“Is casting vote a crime in Tripura ? Just because people worked for the opposition parties they have to be attacked, removed from homes, and now now they have to give donation to BJP at lakhs ? If this is the consequence of casting votes, people of Tripura will not vote in future”, he added.

“When BJP is celebrating Victory, people are crying in the state. Ramnagar constituency’s many areas are haunted by goons. Over hundreds of independent candidate's workers are unable to go home in Ramnagar. Their houses have been vandalized. Rations shop has been burnt, people are hospitalized, lakhs of rupees have been sought”, said Purushottom Roy Barman.

“I have written to the winner candidate Surajit Datta to take action to control violence but so far no action was taken. Today, through the press conference, I want to appeal to Surajit Datta again to stop the violence in Ramnagar constituency”, Purushottom Roy Barman said before media.

Purushottom Roy Barman has appeared in poll first time. He is senior Advocate of Tripura High Court and Secretary of Tripura Human Rights Organization.
