 Tripura: Pulse polio immunization drive going in full swing

Agartala, January 18 (TIWN): Along with the whole country Pulse polio immunization programme is going in full swing at Tripura here today. As part of National Pulse Polio immunization programme, with the initiative of West District Chief Medical Officer’s office, Pulse Polio Vaccination drives is being conducted on January 18 and next drop will be administered on February 23, next covering kids between the ages zero to five year.

 The main programme was conducted at Hindi Higher Secondary School. While inaugurating the programme, Health Minister, Badal Chowdhury told that in order to eradicate polio, there should be alertness in the border. The state has recorded not a single polio case in the last five years but still we don’t want to take any chance. The children are the future of the country, so it is our duty to save the future of the country, Minister further added.  

 A total of 72829 children will be administered polio drops in West Tripura district during the drives. As many as 784 booths have been opened to conduct the Pulse Polio Vaccination drives successfully. The drives will be held from 8 am to 4 pm on the specific date.

Apart from Sadar, In Jirania district, a total of 94 booths have been opened and a total of 8173 children would be given polio drops.  In South Tripura District, 20848 children were given polio drops in total, in the whole state. The drops will be given at 4167 places throughout the state and 3686 workers and 8335 supervisors were pressed into service for this purpose.

Pulse Polio is an immunization campaign established by the government of India in 1995-96 to eradicate poliomyelitis (polio) in India by vaccinating all children under the age of five years against polio virus. This project deals with the ways to fight poliomyelitis through a large scale immunization programme, co-operating with various international institutions, state governments and Non Governmental Organizations, as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, spearheaded by Rotary International, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
