Seminar on improving relationship between people, police and media to combat crime held

AGARTALA, January 18 (TIWN): Seminar on improving relationship between people, police and media to combat crime was organized by Dainik Sambad at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, here today.

 Justice Ruma Pal, (Retd.) Supreme Court of India inaugurated the seminar by lightning the lamp. Addressing in the inaugural ceremony Justice Ruma Pal, (Retd.) Supreme Court of India said that the aim is to educate police, people and media about the laws conferring powers on police with well defined boundaries to ensure police functions within the limits of law. It has to be understood and accepted that police should be given professional freedom to work in accordance with law and their accountability should be only to the rule of law. While evaluating police performance the executive authority including police leadership should only see whether the police actions are in accordance with law, she mentioned.

Chairman of Police Accountability Commission of Tripura, former Judge of the Gauhati High Court Justice A. B. Pal said that to ensure that professional freedom does not degenerate into misuse or abuse of powers alienating thereby people, police commission has been working hard for people’s vigil and closing police-people divide by bringing them in common platform for exchange of views in seminars and workshops.

Justice A.K. Ganguly, (Retd.) Supreme Court of India was present in the seminar as Chief Guest. T.N. Mishra, (Retd.) IPS was present in the seminar as Guest of Honour. Suman Chattopadhyay editor of EI-SAMAY, Kolkata and other dignitaries were also present in the seminar.
