Agartala, January 15 (TIWN): 2 days long Makar Sankranti mela at Unakoti had ended today. The mela was inaugurated on January 14 by Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Kalpana Debnath. Like previous years this year also people belonging to all caste and community gathered at the mela premises to take a holy bath in the Sitakunda. Yet the archeological survey of India did not take any positive step for the development of Unakoti.
This year the mela was organized nearby Natmandir. Delivering speech at the inauguration Kalpana Debnath said that, Unakoti is a national heritage and protected monuments. Due to the apathy and the negligence of the departments concerned, Unakoti has become a skeleton structure. Several times the people of Unakoti approached to the tourism authority and demanded the proper maintenance to save the world famous heritage. It is very important because our future generation will not be able to see the Unakoti as we see now, she said.
It is to be mentioned that ,situated at a distance of about 177 km from Agartala and about five miles from Kailasahar, sub-divisional headquarter of the state, this holy shrine in the hilly part nestles in the lap of picturesque hills with an un ending scene of green vegetation around it. In its rocky walls are found numerous rock-cut images scattered on either side of the hill track.
