AGARTALA, January 2 (TIWN): The ongoing construction work of cover drains are creating problems to the people of the city and also creating traffic squash in the capital city. Talking to TIWN Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Prafullajit Sinha confessing the problems occurring due to the construction work of cover drains across the capital city said that the works at Bidurkarta Chowmuhni and TRTC area are in low progress.

Talking to TIWN today AMC Mayor Prafullajit Sinha said that recently the construction work of the cover drains at Agartala Bidurkarta Chowmuhni and TRTC area are progressing low due to traffic jam. But on the other places the work is moving fast in progress. Sinha confessed that the construction work is creating a massive traffic squash everyday and are also hampering the pedestrians in regard of their movement.  However but the department had a talk with the construction agencies to restrict traffic jams during the work, said Sinha.

Sideling another issue on installation of the CCTV cameras across the capital city, Sinha said that the decision has not been taken yet. It will take another period of time. A total of sic CCTV cameras will be installed at Battala, Nagarjala, Old Motorstand, M.G. Bazar, Lake Chowmuhani and North gat, said Sinha.

Earlier, speaking on the developments of construction of drains and drainage facilities of city Agartala, Sinha informed that AMC has allotted Rs. 200 crore under 13th Finance Commission grant and utilizing the same on all the 35 wards and 6 new Development Committees (DC) within the jurisdiction of AMC for the construction of cover drains.

“At present we have 18 cover drains and more are likely to come in near future”, he said. The additional drains, though, are named feeder drains where main cover drains will pour its water and wastes.

However, but the construction of these cover drains resulted havoc in major areas of the Agartala city. Residents of the city are facing a serious water logging problems for the last few years. As all the wastes of the streets are pull down on the streets and water logging creates. The situation gets worse during rainy season as they had to wade through at least knee­ deep water. A spell of hours heavy rains had cause chaos in the city exposing civic bodies, lack of preparedness to address the problem of water logging. While DWS had blamed AMC for flooding of streets, the civic body had held DWS responsible for the same.
