AGARTALA, Dec 19 (TIWN): The sand-laden vehicle drivers of Jolaibari under Shantir Bazar sub-division on Sunday sat in agitation and alleged that they were being harassed by Ranger Shibu Das of Kakulia Forest Department.

According to the sand-loading drivers, in the past, it used to take 3 to 4 hours to travel from one place to another by loading sand. At present, the district forest officer has reduced the time limit from 30 minutes to 1 hour. If the sand is given to a customer locally then 30 minutes time and if it is given to a customer outside then 1 hour time is being given. As a result, drivers and workers are facing difficulties. The agitation complained that the deadline given by the forest department for cutting sand and going to the river bank to load sand in the car was over. The next time, when the car went back to load sand in it, Ranger Shibu Das stopped it and scolded the driver.
The drivers also complained that there is only one sand extraction license in Jolaibari. Everybody they are facing difficulties in loading sand from other places. At present, a large number of Prime Minister's Housing Scheme houses have been provided across the state. If sand is not provided properly, everyone will face special difficulties in building a house, said the agitating drivers. The also added that the state government should pay special attention to this.
After the blockade, the forest department staff informed the workers and vehicle drivers that all issues will be discussed in the presence of the district forest officer tomorrow. The workers and motorists withdrawn the agitation after that. They told the media that if this problem is not solved, they will join a bigger movement in the future. It remains to be seen what steps the forest department will take to maintain the development trend in the state.
