AGARTALA, Nov 28 (TIWN): BJP on Sunday secured a clean sweep while the Trinamool Congress emerged as a strong political force in the Tripura civic elections for which polling was held on November 25. But the entire poll was held amid terror and massive rigging. Left, TMC and Tipra Motha all the anti-BJP parties have criticized the BJP for its massive poll violence and intimidation. At the same time parties also condemned the Election Commission and Police’s role. Reacting over Tripura CM Biplab Deb’s statement of ‘Public mandate in support of BJP’, CPI-M State Secretary Jitendra Choudhury said ‘If it is a Public Mandate who were the ones who alleged that they could not cast votes. Such videos along with rigging videos are viral in social media". TMC has claimed it has emerged as the second strongest party in Tripura after BJP, whereas Left has rubbished the claim.
"In Tripura's Civic Poll BJP, LF and TMC has secured 2,38,962(60%), 79,586(19.99%) and 66,388(16.68%) votes respectively. Traditionally in urban areas Left Parties vote share has always been less than the other right wing parties. Moreover, this time Left Parties were prevented to filled up their candidates in 7 urban bodies. Majority of the Polling Agents of the Left Parties have to be withdrawn in Agartala Municipal Corporation in the early hours of the polling on 25th. Hence the propaganda of some other party of securing the position of main opposition is not factually correct", stated Choudhury.
No CCTV camera, no VVPAT was used in this poll and booth capturing, rigging footage are viral in social media though no action was taken by the police.
In post poll violence in Sonamura, Teliamura, many people were injured. BJP has organized attacks house to house.
According to State Election Commission officials, the main opposition party CPI-M won three seats in three municipal bodies in Kailashahar, Ambassa and Panisagar while the Trinamool Congress won one seat in Ambassa Municipal council.
The Trinamool Congress secured over 20 per cent votes and second position in 27 of the 51 seats in the politically important AMC which has put up a big challenge to both the ruling BJP and the key opposition CPI-M led Left parties.
However, the Left parties and the TMC did not put up candidates in all the 334 seats in the civic elections to the AMC and 19 other urban local bodies - Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats -- alleging unprecedented political violence, attacks and intimidations.
TMC's National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee in a series of tweets described the party's performance in the Tripura civic poll as their big success ahead of the 2023 assembly elections in the BJP-ruled Tripura.
