AGARTALA, Nov 17 (TIWN): BJP led Tripura Govt’s undemocratic move once again received a jolt in the Supreme Court as Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered that no coercive steps should be taken against two lawyers and one journalist, who were booked under the draconian anti-terror law Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) by the Tripura police over their social media posts.
A Bench comprising the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Surya Kant passed the order after two lawyers Mr Mukesh and Mr Ansarul Haq Ansar and journalist Shyam Meera Singh filed a petition to quash the UAPA FIR.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appeared for the petitioners.
“the CJI observed that he read some news reports that the journalists were granted bail in the Tripura FIRs. Mr.Bhushan clarified that they were two other journalists, and the petitioners are yet to be arrested……….”, Live Law reported.
The bench then passed the order directing Tripura Police that no coercive steps be taken against.
Tripura High Court Senior Advocate Purushottom Roy Barman has welcomed the order from the Supreme Court.
