Security beefed up in Agartala ahead of Xmas, New Year

AGARTALA, December 24 (TIWN): To prevent any untoward incident in the state security has been beefed up in Agartala in the wake of Christmas and New Year celebration. The police have also intensifying patrolling to ensure peaceful celebrations of the Christmas and New Year.

According to a high-level police official,  patrolling has been stepped up along with checking, blocking and search at vulnerable places. Security has been tightened particularly at places of worship, prayer houses and entry points of the district.

The state government has made unprecedented security arrangements in all urban areas including the state capital to ensure peaceful Christmas and New Year celebration in the state. The state police had started standard precautionary measures in urban and rural areas. Foot patrols and mobile patrols were increased in the rural areas; focus was laid on distant villages, the official added.

The police has installed drop grates at all significant roads to prevent entry of vehicles in crowded areas during peak hours. According to the police strict watch is being kept over the activities of anti-social elements and preventive actions are being taken. A standard alert was sounded across all police stations of the state, the official informed.

It was reported that around six NLFT militants have entered Chaplin Chara under Karbook subdivision of Gomati district during the last few days, said sources.

Earlier taking to TIWN, SP of Gomati Sankar Debnath said that at present police cannot confirm that six NLFT militants entered Chaplin Chara under Karbook subdivision of Gomati district. But we are conducting a search operation in the area and the BSF and district police authorities were asked to maintain strict vigil along the border so that militants could not enter into the Indian soil, he mentioned. Around 400 meters of bordering area are still unfenced and working is going to complete the fencing in the 400 meters unfenced area, SP said.

The insurgents were using the Tripura-Mizoram-Bangladesh tri-junction as corridor, he said security agencies, including the Assam Riffles, have been trying hard to stop infiltration of militants from across the border.
