Press Council of India takes suo-motu cognizance on Attack on media houses in Tripura on 8th September

New Delhi, Sep 28 (TIWN): The Press Council of India (PCI) Chairman Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad has noted with concern the alleged attack on media houses in Tripura during a political rally.

Taking suo-motu cognizance on the matter, the Hon’ble Chairman has directed the Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Tripura and the Director General of Police, Agartala Police, Tripura to submit their comments on the facts of the case at the earliest. 

3 newspaper offices - 1) Pratibadi Kalam, 2) Daily Desher Katha, 3) Duranta TV and at least 50 party offices of CPI-M have been set on fire by BJP in 24 hours. On Sept 8 in Agartala 1) Pratibadi Kalam, 2) Daily Desher Katha were openly attacked in broad day light and the accused persons faces are exposed but the entire incident left without any action. 

On 8th September, a rally was led by BJP leaders Rajib Bhattacharjee, MLA Kalyani Roy, Mohila Morcha President Papia Datta, Yuva Morcha leaders Nabadul Banik, Viki Prasad. 

The rally stopped in front of Pratibadi Kalam newspaper and then two party offices of CPI-M and at last Daily Desher Katha newspaper office. One by one, these four offices were set on fire, all the vehicles, bikes, bicycles were burnt, stone pelting has injured many.

The BJP workers also attacked the police. So far no arrest of any BJP worker was done. The BJP leaders however are the prime accused persons for the political riot.
