AGARTALA, July 7 (TIWN): Demolition of the War Memorial (Saheed Meenar) at the Post Office Chowmuhani was protested by the Bangali Chatra Yuva Samaj on Wednesday.

The protest was staged in front of the District Magistarte's office at Agartala demanding reinstallation of the War Memorial which was removed from Post Office Chowmuhani and shifted to a park, located at the outskirts of Agartala.

Though the Govt has claimed it is the demand of soldiers but such demand was never heard before the BJP Govt was established. Moreover, the Saheed Meener was established in the presence of the late soldiers themselves at that time in memory of 1971 War when India gave Bangladesh freedom from Pakistan under then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Two cannons were located there which the Indian soldiers had snatched from Pakistan. 

After Biplab Deb Govt was established in power, first, the cannons were removed and then the war memorial was demolished and demolition footage erupted massive resentment among the Agartala locals.

Though the Govt claimed, it's only based on soldiers' demands, earlier former DM had shared a "Smart City" model footage also with media while removing the cannons. The DM however also mentioned that it was a move to fulfill soldiers' demands.

At that time also, protests had erupted against the move but the State Govt proceeded with its War memorial removal process at Post Office Chowmuhani
