AGARTALA, May 28 (TIWN): Within 24 hours after the mother of a newborn baby lost her life due to the negligence of the health department in IGM hospital, another lady residing in the remote area lost her newborn child due to the negligence of ASHA workers. The family alleged, despite the order of the health department, the Asha workers did not communicate with the pregnant mother, Banati Debbarma during her pregnancy period, as a result, she did not receive the necessary advice and medications. However, the health department of our state has hired Asha staff to do service work only in rural or remote areas, especially for pregnant mothers. It is the sole responsibility of the staff in each area to take care of them and bring them to the doctors on time and until the baby is born.

Alleging the Asha workers, Banati’s husband, Manoranjan Debbarma also claimed that such incidents often occur in their area, in Haludia ADC Village under Mungiakami block of Teliamura subdivision as the area is such a remote place that one has to reach the Teliamura town through boat passing the Khowai river as there is no road built for the vehicles to operate. Sometimes when the boats remain unfunctional, one has to walk for 5 kilometers along this river to reach the town.
