AGARTALA, Nov 18 (TIWN): Criticism erupted after Tripura BJP Govt has totally forgot about "National Press Day" observation. Even heavyweight Ministers, MLAs also forgot about this day, although MLA Sudip Roy Barman in his social media page has greeted media persons on the Press Day. After being criticized in media and resentments erupted among media persons for first time not observing Press Day in this state, in a press release, excuse of COVID-19 was given by the Government here. Also it was said in the press release that from Delhi no direction was given about Press Day observation. Under the BJP Govt, however, Tripura already lost press-freedom and now almost all media are standing against the Dictator rule under Chief Minister Biplab Deb. Increasing official, unofficial attacks on media have also reported in this state. In this situation, observation of Press Day, how far could bring changes, it is also questionable.

In 1956, the First Press Commission was planned to form a Press Council to protect freedom of the press in India. On 4 July 1966, the Press Council was established in India. It came into effect from 16 November 1966. Therefore, 16 November is celebrated as National Press Day every year.
