AGARTALA, November 19 (TIWN): Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) leaders, supporters and workers including Pradesh Youth Congress, National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Congress Seva Dal celebrated 97th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at congress bhavan, here on Wednesday.
Opposition leader Sudip Roy Burman inaugurated the programme by garlanding the portrait of Indira Gandhi at congress bhavan. Speaking on the occasion Sudip Roy Burman said that the contribution by the Congress then under the leadership of Indira Gandhi was tremendous. She dedicated her life to the nation for the poorest of the poor. He also admired her work regarding land reforms and her revolutionary step for centralization of banks in those days. He added that today’s youth should come forward to serve her dream for the upliftment of society and poor people.
Later, Opposition Leader Sudip Roy Barman, working president of TPCC Asish Saha, Youth Congress state president Susanta Chowdhury, NSUI state president Bapi Das and Congress Seva Dal convenor Sukhmoy Saha went to Gandhi Ghat and paid floral tributes.
Mrs. Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, near her then Delhi residence by two Sikh security guards who wanted vengeance for authorizing a military attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar five months earlier. Later, massive riots erupted in the nation following her murder, as Hindus took their revenge on Sikhs.
