AGARTALA, November 14 (TIWN): A awareness rally was organized by Sarkar’s Diabetes Nutrition Clinic and Research Centre to celebrate the World Diabetes Day, here today. The rally started from Matanginipritilala Hall and traveled through various roads of the city. The theme of this year World Diabetes Day is ‘Healthy eating and Diabetes’.

Addressing the rally Dr. Swapan Sarkar said today we mark World Diabetes Day. It is a day of celebration for those with diabetes who demonstrate that with access to the right diabetes care, education and essential medicines life can be lived to its fullest.

He further said that there was so much one could do to prevent diabetes such as healthy eating, which needed to be promoted through innovative and culturally sensitive approaches to public education and building of strategic partnerships involving all stakeholders.

Diabetes is a disease of development. The misconception that diabetes is ‘a disease of the wealthy’ is still held, to the detriment of desperately needed funding to combat the pandemic. In coming years we have much to do in making the case for those who have diabetes now and will have in the future, he added. During the rally Dr. Swapan Sarkar had given 200 insulin free of cost to the diabetic patients.

World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world and is held on November 14 of each year. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to the alarming rise of diabetes around the world. World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community. While the campaigns last the whole year, the day itself marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.

Each year, World Diabetes Day is centered on a theme related to diabetes. Topics covered have included diabetes and human rights, diabetes and lifestyle, diabetes and obesity, diabetes in the disadvantaged and the vulnerable, diabetes in children and adolescents. People with diabetes get to take a day off work or school on this day and talking about Diabetes.
