Kailasahar, Nov 11 (TIWN): Kailasahar aerodrome, located at Durgapur area under Kailasahar sub-division which was established in the 60th century with small aircraft service, now remains closed for past 09 years due to lack of passengers. Now the airport is almost turned into an abandoned place. A team of Airport Authority of India (AAI) had visited the Kailasahar way back in 2011 with an effort to re-open the Kailasahar airport. But the airport is lying non-functional since several years.

According to the sources, after the visit, the AAI team had noticed that the existing runway required be expanded to almost double its present length and all modern safety equipment needs to be installed in the airport.

the sources also informed, later, the state government had also conducted a survey where it was found that the runway in Kailasahar airport needs extension over 100 meter and acquisition of lands near 120 acres. As a result, the state government had sent a prop0osal to the central government to sanction amount for land acquisition. But the Center in replay asked the state government to manage the land acquisition, added the source.

The AAI had agreed to invest in upgrading the abandoned airport but the outlay for land acquisition pushed the Kailasahar airport in back ward to be re opened.

If Kailashahar airport is made operational, Unokoti district will have direct connectivity with Kolkata, Guwahati, South Assam and many other parts of the North-Eastern region. It will also reduce pressure on Agartala airport.

With the demand to re-open the Kailasahar airport, Kailasahar Unnayan Mancha had staged a road blockade 3 months back. On that time, the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Kailasahar- Ajit Sukla Das assured them to take the issue to the higher authority. But unfortunately, the state government maintaining silence over this issue till date.
