TRAI regulations play a significant role in protecting the interests of the telecom consumers

AGARTALA, November 8 (TIWN): Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regulations play a significant role in protecting the interests of the telecom consumers, said Abhijit Basak, Sr, Research Officer, TRAI, Kolkata while speaking in the consumer outreach programme (Initiatives of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to protect interests of telecom consumers) organized by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in association with consumers’ protection association, Agartala at sonar tari, state guest house here today.

He further said that the authority’s mission is to ensure the interests of consumers are protected and at the same time to nurture conditions for growth of telecommunications, broadcasting and cable services in a manner and a pace which will enable India to play leading role in the emerging global information society.

It is, however, necessary that consumers become aware of their rights, so that they can benefit from these regulations, directions and orders of TRAI, he said. It is necessary that information is disseminated to consumers and consumer organization so that they are fully aware of these regulatory measures and can effectively safeguard their rights and privileges, he mentioned.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was established in the year 1997 in pursuance of TRAI (Ordinance) 1997, which was later replaced by an Act of Parliament, to regulate the telecommunication services.

Some of the major recommendatory, regulatory and tariff setting functions of TRAI are to make recommendations on the need and timing for introduction of new service provider, on the terms and conditions of license to a service provider, ensure compliance of terms and conditions of license, effective management of spectrum, lay down the standards of quality of service to be provided by the service providers and ensure the quality of service and conduct the periodical survey of such service provided by the service providers so as to protect interest of the consumers of telecommunication service, ensure effective compliance of Universal Service Obligations, notify the rates at which telecommunication services within India and outside India shall be provided under this Act etc.
