Sabroom, Oct 30 (TIWN): The most awaited border haat along Indo-Bangladesh international border near Srinagar under Sabroom sub-division and Madhupur of Bangladesh is likely to become as hub for the smugglers. The local sources said, smuggling of goods through this area becomes an alarming issue. The border fencing is also remained completely ineffective in the said area. The bordering people simply walk across from Bangladesh into India and vice versa as the villages are neighboring to each other.

At present even BSF patrols are confused to prevent the smuggling issues relating to influx of Bangladeshi citizens, smugglers. According to the local sources, recently a house in the area was found full with smuggled goods. Smuggling of phensidyl from india to Bangladesh is a common factor in that area. On the other hand, the Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) also fails to avert the smuggling by the bordering villagers.

The local sources informed, many of the villagers who live along the Indo-Bangla international border are dependent on smuggling for their livelihood. Following this alarming issue, Border Security Force (BSF) made a proposal to shift such bordering villages at a considerable distance so that a separate zone and buffer zone can be set up between the Zero Line and the border outpost for BSF jawans as the fencing of border and to shift BSF jawan in every point is not possible.

A narrow strip of land in the middle of a pond marks the Zero Line. An elderly Bangladeshi man showed the border pillar that lies submerged. The border is very porous and it is just impossible to have a human chain of BSF across the border to plug it.

The first border haat in Tripura, a market facility on zero line of border along Indo-Bangla international border is likely to be inaugurated soon by the Union Minister for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman and her Bangladesh counterpart- Tofil Ahmedat at Srinagar in south Tripura district. This haat on the Srinagar-Ramgarh border is second in North-East after Meghalaya. People living within a distance of 5 km from the border are entitled to do business at the haat. The facility was opened to boost bilateral trade between nations. But After Border Haat Inauguration near Srinagar it will be an open paradise for smugglers as well as anti-socials as they can cris-cross along the border on the pretext of Border Hut vendors with valid ID cards.
