NEW DELHI / AGARTALA, Sep 29 (TIWN): A sudden rise of criminals in the society across Tripura which has been concerning the overall generation is not a detached incident than rise of “criminalization in politics”, leading interfering police’s tasks to play neutral role against the criminal empire. The current socio-political scenario gets a significance in former Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma’s fresh statement who said, “Criminals dare when police turn dozy”. He clearly said, “Actually, criminals have their own way of working. They wait for the police to go silent and then gradually raise their heads. The police need to be constantly on the criminals'' trail. It's the people who suffer due to the police slackness”.

Crime rate had always been up in this Northeast state Tripura, but a sharp rise and undemocratic practices, broad-day-light hooliganism get inspiration when political interference not only influences police’s independent investigation but anti-social elements get direct motivation when a political leader threatens an IPS officer on camera to kill him on spot but no action is being taken against such leaders risking the dignity, self-respect inside the police dept.

In Tripura apart from BJP’s present West Tripura MP (via rigging) Pratima Bhowmik who threatened IPS officer Kiran Kumar to be killed on spot during midnight post poll-violence sponsored by her, there are MLAs like Ram Prasad Pal whose qualification is just 8th passed thrice was seen threatening police officers and teaching them how police should function.

Accompany of such leaders further motivates criminals to raise heads under political shelter and many times well reputed people also get inspiration in this wrong path when police stay numb to take action against them either its smuggling case at Dhanpur or not arresting MLA even after High Court’s order as Law Minister himself brief media to save such MLAs, which resulted in the recent gang-rape incident when police didn’t take any FIR and ultimate not only police suffered, but Govt’s image  was damaged.

Also in recently held Yuva Morcha rally leaders were openly instigating violence but amid lack of unity, can rudderless police dept even think to serve legal notice for violence instigating speech  in Political rally ?

It’s not that police have not given free hand in all sectors but when political interference reported police turn dozy.

The former Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma, in an interview said, "Recent incidents, like firing on the cops, murder of a woman in a car close to the DCP''s office, and criminals riding car bonnets, firing and killing civilians, prove that the Delhi Police have gone into sleep mode. Criminals get emboldened when the police go silent”.

On the reason behind the police inaction, Sharma said, "What I am saying is based on the 37-year-long experience in the police department. If there is fear of law among people, who would like to take to the crime."

"If there is no fear of law, the criminals will take advantage of the situation and will become emboldened," said former Police Commissioner.

Notewrothy, Neeraj Kumar, former CBI Joint Director and ex-Delhi Police Commissioner, said, "Rise in criminal activities is a slow and gradual process, and happens when criminals think the police are slow to respond. Once criminals get emboldened, it becomes extremely tough for the police to salvage the situation."

Kumar, who tightened noose around underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, said, "If the police are pro-active, and constantly turning heat on criminals by hot pursuit or other methods, miscreants won't try take an upper hand."

Another former police commissioner, on the condition of anonymity, said, "I don't see any magic formula for the Delhi Police to tackle the rise in crime. The police will have to make a lot of efforts to cover the lost ground and to control the law and order situation, which has deteriorated to a new low."

In a blunt message, former Commissioners advocated fixing the responsibility for deteriorating law and order situation. The onus of failure was at the top -- with the Police Commissioner, and no one else, they said.

Kumar, who was instrumental in deportation of terrorist Aftab Ansari from Dubai, said, "The festive season is here. People will come out in large numbers to celebrate Navratra and Dussehra. Criminals will try to have their way. It''s a litmus test for the police to see that festivals go without any major violent incidents."

The police department would have to ensure better coordination between the top and the bottom of the force to defeat criminals, who were out to create mayhem on the streets, he added.
