AGARTALA, Aug 25 (TIWN): The by-election for the 14-Badharghat Legislative Assembly constituency (SC) will be held on September 23, the Election Commission of India announced in New Delhi on Sunday. The seat had become vacant after the demise of BJP MLA Dilip Sarkar. Along with Tripura, by-polls will be held for the Hamirpur seat in Uttar Pradesh, Dantewada in Chhattisgarh and Pala in Kerala on September 23. The counting of votes will be held on September 27.Nominations can be submitted from August 28 till September 4. The scrutiny of the nominations will be held on September 4. The last date for withdrawing nominations has been scheduled for September 7. Model code of conduct has come in effect in 14-Badhaghat constituency. The senior Tripura BJP leader and five-time MLA Dilip Sarkar died on April 1 at a private hospital in Delhi after prolonged illness.
Sarkar, 61, a former state PWD Minister in the Congress-Tripura Upajati Juba Samity (TUJS) alliance government between 1988 and 1993, died after suffereing from acute liver disease.
Sarkar, the sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Badharghat, was a bachelor. Sarkar, elected to the state assembly five times since 1988, joined the ruling BJP along with other Congress leaders in 2017.
Tripura Election has now become a major concern due to massive political violence occurred in all the elections recently held including Lok Sabha Election. This seat is a major issue for all parties and reportedly almost all political parties are interested to give candidates.
With the announcement of the election schedule, a model code of conduct has come in effect in these constituencies.
