AGARTALA, July 28 (TIWN): AMC has started massive cleaning drive with 6 large desilting machines. Till now by 600 numbers of workers, the encroachment on drains are being demolished.

The move of AMC started after CM Biplab Deb started direct monitoring. After sets of personal visits by the Chief Minister to check cleaning activities in Agartala City (Last visit was on 8th July 2019) the Agartala Municipal Corporation has started massive cleaning drive of drains, Baazars, water bodies and residential areas. All the municipal officials are deployed on the ground to supervise the cleaning drive and complete all works by Durga Puja.

AMC has increased its manpower engaged in drain cleaning from earlier 150 to 600 labours so that drains are desilted fully and at faster pace.

Zonal Officers and Engineers have started visiting ward areas to supervise the cleaning works from 6 am to 9 am. Those shopkeepers and residents who are littering are penalised on the spot. Everyday more than Rs 60,000 penalty is being recovered said AMC sources.

After cleaning Akhaura Khal and Kalapania Khal before rainfall, all 6 large desilting machines are deployed in feeder drains to clear the accumulated silt. In case of some drains like Shibnagar, Town Pratapgarh, Kalapania and Chitta Ranjan Road, actual desilting is happening after lapse of 7 to 10 years. Therefore, all the citizens are coming forward to welcome and help the AMC staff.

The Plan is to desilt 55 major and feeder drains of 54 KM length which will yield 1,11,225 Cubic Meter silt over next 3 months and clean 21 Baazar areas in Agartala as a part of special drive.

Water body in Maharaj Ganj Baazar is being cleaned after 30 years. The water is turned into green colour and appears poisonous.

AMC has decided to Transport the waste carrying vehicles from 4 am to 9 am. No waste containing vehicle will ply between 9 am to 11 am on main roads. Even the large commercial vehicles have been banned from entering in Agartala City during the day time as it obstructs traffic and cleaning activities.

Ward wise and drain wise assessment of cleaning activities has been done by the Zonal officers. The deployment of workers shall be made for specific span of the drains for year round cleaning by the Zonal officers. Drain cleaning work shall be supervised by the Ward Secretaries and the Health Inspectors. Their payments are to be made from Zone offices instead of ward offices as prevalent earlier.

While cleaning the drains, the silt shall not be spread on the main road. Rather the silt shall be carried to one end of the drain in the corner and kept there for only one day for drying. Mechanical Division shall lift the silt within 24 hours.

Present system of providing mandays to the Market Committees for cleaning work has been stopped. AMC will outsource the internal cleaning of all Baazar areas by open tender based on Per Tonne of Solid Waste handed over to AMC vehicles. For every Baazar there shall be Service Level Agreement (SLA) to be signed with the outsourced agency, after meeting the service standards the payments shall be released by AMC.

AMC Police Task Force is seen moving on the main roads and check encroachments on roads, drains and footpaths. They are provided with Skid Steer Loader and dumpers to lift the construction materials stacked on the drains/ road side, in addition to levying penalties on the spot. After completing encroachment removal on M G Baazar area, yesterday encroachments on drains in Lal Bahadur Choumuni was carried out. Encroachment removal drive shall be continued relentlessly said AMC officials.

With the special cleaning drive of AMC, Agartala is set to get clean look by Durga Puja.
