Increasing Crime against Women in Tripura : Women Congress protests before CM’s quarter over CM’s silence

AGARTALA / NEW DELHI, May 17 (TIWN): With the increasing crime against women in Tripura, Women Congress activists have gheraoed Chief Minister’s quarter today morning.The protest was staged to let the people know regarding a question of ‘CM’s silence’ over the increasing crime against women.Either hanging housewife after murder or burnt alive, Tripura has crossed all limitations in crime against women. Surprisingly, even though various women across the state were attacked, killed recently, but no statement came from CM, rather along with mob-lynching mob attacks on women have hiked a lot. Tripura Human Rights Organization has recently, condemned the recent brutal murder of housewife at Bishalgarh who was hanged in a tree and burnt alive. Also in a press release, the organization has blamed the Govt for its failure to secure women, children and minors. Recently a housewife was burnt alive after she was hanged in a tree, which has shocked the state. The incident has taken place at Bajendranagar village under Madhupur PS of Bishalgarh, under Sepahijala District.

The deceased has been identified as Anumati Chowdhury, W/O-Tinku Chowdhury.

Father of the deceased Matilal Sarkar has filed an FIR against Anumati’s mother in law Maya Rani Chowdhury, Father in law Nirmal Chowdhury and two brother in laws Pintu Chowdhury and Banti Chowdhury.

Her husband Tinku Chowdhury also alleged that his family members have done this and when he attempted to stop them, he was also beaten.On May 8 night his wife was beaten and then her mouth was tightened with cloths and then hanged. Then they set fire on her body by pouring kerosene.

Deceased father has said, as his son-in-law is very simple and weak person. So whenever he protested for his wife, they also use to beat him.There were dowry pressures on Anumati and also her brother in laws attempted to physically assault her many times. 

On yesterday, one more housewife’s deadbody was recovered from a tree. The incident took place at Bishalgarh subdivision. The deceased has been identified as Abamika Debnath. Police have arrested Anamika’s husband Rupak Debnath whereas his in-laws are absconding.Her body was found in a tree behind their house. Police is investigating the case. 

On May 5, a woman was beaten, hair was chopped off and face was darkened by neighbours in allegation of having extra-marital affair. The incident took place at Bodhjunganagar Rajabarbag area on May 1st. Condemnation was done by media and public as Women Commission members of state didn’t visit her home yet.
