MCI cancels post-graduate (General Surgery) units of AGMC

Agartala, Oct 10 (TIWN): Suppressed resentment is prevailed among the Post-graduate (General Surgery) students of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) as the Medical Council of India (MCI) decided not to consider unit-I, II and III of AGMC as PG units based on the standard of examination and other teaching facilities.

In an order issued by MCI, considering the Council Assessor’s report of May 20, 2014, the Postgraduate Committee of MCI decided to recommend not to recognize MS (General Surgery) qualification granted by Tripura University in respect of students being trained at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) due to several deficiencies.

According to the order, the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) having following deficiencies; there is no Asso. Professor in Unit-I and There are only 2 faculties in the Unit; hence faculty complement is incomplete and it cannot be considered as PG Unit. Units II and III have only 2 faculties each; hence they cannot be considered as PG Units. No new books have been purchased in last 3 years in departmental library. All the journals have been donated by faculties. There is no separate Burns ward. And due to other deficiencies which are pointed out in the assessment report, the committee has taken this decision.

On being asked, the Principal in-charge of AGMC- Dr. Chinmoy Biswas informed the college authority is trying to sort out the matter as soon as possible. “We shall try to trounce the deficiencies soon to come out from this difficult situation”, he said.

The Director of medical Education- Basudev Bhattacharjee informed that he is out of station now. He advised our correspondent to gather information regarding the issue from the college authority. The principal of AGMC is also out of station. The state government has been maintaining the role of mute spectator in this regard.
