AGARTALA, October 6 (TIWN): A crawling opposition, a consistent reign of over two decades and national acclaim (Presidents Colour) bestowed upon the shoulders of the Tripura Police are proving to be inadequate for the Tripura State to control various crimes, and as it is said that statistics never lies, the terrifying numbers tell it all. And it is the time for the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, to take up initiatives to curb the crime graph of Tripura. All sorts of crimes in Tripura have made the state a safe haven for criminals and the alarmingly rising rate calls for a reality check of policing for the media shy care-taker DGP of Tripura. Nearly 3 persons are murdered in Tripura per week (2013) while 12 cases are reported in the cases of Kidnapping and Abduction in a month. 144 kidnapping and abduction cases were held in the year 2013 where 104 incidents were reported for marriage purposes, which means 104 girls were forcibly extorted for marrying, says the reports of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Though the state has registered a zero figure in slavery, prostitution, selling body parts and camel racing in this regard.

Data released by NCRB also tell that every second day a woman is raped in Tripura (as of 2012) with the figure of 202 rape cases in 2012 alone. Though the number has seen a downfall from 258 in 2011 but during the period from 2001 to 2012, this number is seventh most worst. The year which had least rape cases during the said period is 2003 with 135. Alongwith that, the atrocities on the women folk in the names of kidnapping and abduction is numbered as 120 in 2012 with a rising trend as 106 in 2010 and 113 in 2011. The regional disparity is a sheer instance of shame for Tripura as 87 deaths have occurred, last year, due to dowry only with neighboring state Nagaland having not a single such death, tell the data source of  Open Government Data (OGD) platform of India, maintained by Department of States of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India.  Additionally, an alarming 375 cases were reported as regards assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty. 1147 cases were reported under the head Cruelty by Husband or his relatives (Under IPC 498A), in the year 2012.

Not only the serious crimes like murders and women related crimes but the Police have also performed poorly when it comes to safeguarding the properties of people. A mere less than 35 % success rate has been registered by the Police in the year 2013. Properties worth Rs. 5,50,09360/- were stolen in the year 2013 where articles valuing Rs.1, 59, 24,931 were recovered.

With 72 Police stations and number of other units among the nationally acclaimed Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Tripura Police is one of the very few state Police Forces who were awarded the President Colour in 2012 and at that time, Tripura was the fourth state in the country after Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Tamil Nadu to receive the distinction. The honour denotes their success in combating the three decade-old militancy in the state and ensuring that there was no human rights abuse. Now where a woman is raped every second day and recognition says there is no human rights violation, does it mean women rights are not to be considered as human rights? The answer is awaited from the people in power.
