SONAMURA, September 25 (TIWN): In a first ever joint raid on Rahimpur market located in close vicinity of the Indo-Bangla Border, where a well-entrenched smuggling racket is known to have been operative with relative impunity for long, a huge amount of contraband articles like Phensedyl Syrups, illicit Foreign Liquor, Sound-crackers, Bangladesh-made cigarettes, etc. were recovered today, the total market value of which is more than 10 lakh rupees.

The Joint operation involving the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration, local BSF and Police personnel, was led by Subhasis Das, SDM Sonamura; and it went on from 11.30 a.m. till 3.00 p.m., spanning three-and-half hours. During the raid, several shops in the market were searched based on prior secret information.  From three such shops, total of 2450 bottles of Codeine Phosphate laced Phensedyl  syrup were recovered, the market value of which is estimated to be Rs.7.35 lakh. From another shop of the market, 360 bottles of Beer and 510 bottles of Whisky of different brands were seized, the market value of which was pegged at Rs.2.25 lakh.

It may be mentioned that recovery of foreign liquor assumes special significance in view of the oncoming Durga Puja and Id festivities, since indiscriminate availability and abuse of liquor is considered to be a major triggering factor for law and order problem during such occasions. Noticeably, sound-crackers like chocolate bombs, chain-crackers, etc. were also recovered in huge quantities during the search of certain other shops in the market, which would be worth about Rs.0.50 lakh. Such storage and sale of sound-emitting crackers are entirely illegal by dint of the Order issued to this effect by the State Pollution Control Board and the hon’ble High Court of Tripura. A huge stock of illicit Bangladesh-made cigarettes totaling 360 packets was also recovered during the raid, which is valued at Rs.0.30 lakh. Today’s joint operation was a perfectly coordinated exercise by the Sub-Divisional Administration, BSF and Police, and it is expected that it will surely have a deterrent impact on the vicious smuggling cycle that thrives in such border areas and gives birth to rampant border crimes. Anil Kumar, DCG, BSF, and Amal Chakraborty, OC Kalamchowra Police Station had led the BSF and Police team respectively that took part in the operation. Since there was no claimant of the seized articles, and the owners of the shops from where such articles were recovered could not be identified precisely, no immediate case was lodged against anybody.
