AGARTALA, September 24 (TIWN): Rape victims deprived of getting proper compensation according to the Tripura Victim Compensation Scheme 2012. The total figure of crime against women including rape, molestation and other crimes registered in the state till July 31 this year was stated to be 1,022. However only seven victims have been given compensation after the implementation of the scheme. It is to be mentioned here that Tripura Government in collaboration with the Central Government implemented a new scheme for the rape victims in the year 2012. The scheme stated that ”A new Section 357 A was incorporated in the code of criminal Procedure in order to provide for the State Government to prepare, in coordination with the Central Government, a Scheme called "Victim compensation Scheme" for the purpose of compensation to the victim or his dependents who have suffered loss or injury as a result of the crime. With the introduction of this scheme the victim has been assured of a compensation amount of fifty thousand.

But surprisingly it comes out into notice that only seven victims have been given compensation in the recent 3 years after implementation. The yearwise statistiocs are given below:-

                   Year                           Compensation to victims

Replying to State Legislative Assembly session moved by opposition MLA Ratan Lal Nath, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has presented the above mentioned data. However it is seen that the number of rape victims has reached to the level of 1582.

According to statistics provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in 2013, Tripura recorded to be one of the most vulnerable locations in the country for crime against woman with a 86.95 percent crime rate on women including sexual crimes.

Mr. Sarkar told that the number of rape and crimes on women are increasing due to awareness of womenfolk on sexual crimes and dismantling of joint family structure was responsible for rise in crime on women. Now the question arises, what should be the future of these victims?
