AGARTALA, Sep 4 (TIWN): The first Cancer prevention and palliative care training program commenced at Silchar, wherein doctors from the National Cancer Grid and Pallium India are training the medical and paramedical staff of Assam Rifles on the various techniques of prevention and cure against cancer.

During the course of training, the Assam Rifles personal would be trained at the Cachar Cancer Hospital Silchar and home visits would also be conducted for training on palliative care. This is a major humanitarian initiative on the part of Assam Rifles to prevent the spread of cancer in the Northeast.

There are more than 1. 5 million new cases of Cancer that get added each day and the rate of incidence of cancer in Northeast especially South Assam, Mizoram and Tripura is almost double of the national average. Headquarters Inspector general Assam Rifles (East) had signed a Memorandum of understanding with the National Cancer grid last month where it had taken a resolve to assist in "prevention and early detection of cancer" and "palliative care".

This training initiative will play a key role in enhancing awareness about cancer in the remote areas of the region. True to its motto of being "Friends of the North East people", Assam Rifles has once again displayed its human face by undertaking this noble initiative.
