Electric traffic signals soon to be introduced in Tripura

Agartala, September 18 (TIWN): Traffic Electric signals will soon be prominent in six busy streets of Agartala city. Though the preferable time is not yet been fixed-says Superintendent of Traffic Smriti Ranjan Das. Speaking to TIWN, Mr Das informed that decision had been taken for the installation of Electronic traffic signals in the six prominent places namely Math Chowhumani, Orient Chowhumani, Paradise Chowhumani, North Gate, Gurkhabasti and IGM Chowhumani.

But still no preferable date and time is yet been fixed as funds are not upto the mark. It is to be mentioned here that earlier some traffic signals were installed but they are not properly functioned. Due to this they got damaged. 

On the other hand, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also replied in the Assembly on a question raised by MLA Asish Saha that traffic signals will be installed, but some time is needed for this. It is to mentioned here that during the last 10 years total 7212 persons got injured .

 During the years (2009-10 and 2010-11) as many as 1748 road accidents took place that killed 453 persons. A total of 2573 persons were injured in the same period. Add to it were 291 persons who were killed in 1015 road accidents in the year 2012, 1382 person more were injured. 

Improper management of traffic laws or lack of road safety monitoring in all highways have led to sharp spurt in casualties from road mishaps. After insurgency road accidents have become the biggest killers in Tripura. 

Tripura had a dangerous rise in number of automobiles in the last few years. As per government statistics, state has registered sharp rise in automobiles, especially two-wheelers and small commercial transport vehicles. Till December 2012, the number of all kinds of automobiles stands at 2.6 lakh in Tripura, which were only 58,581 in the year 2001. 

The number of vehicles increased in Tripura, but the road status in terms of widening and bigger lining remained same as in the year 2001. Moreover, reckless driving, carrying passengers beyond capacity by the passenger carrying vehicles and insufficient knowledge of traffic rules and regulations are often reasons for road accidents. Transport department sources said, Tripura received 819 percent rise in automobiles of different categories from 1972-1998. The rise in automotives multiplied abruptly since 2007. 

While 35 years of difference brought about 819 percent of rise, barely 5 years showed 108 percent rise in automobiles. 502 two-wheelers used to run on the roads of Tripura in 1972; the figures reached 151251 as confirmed till March, 2012. Light Medium Vehicles (LMV) like jeep, taxi, van etc showed a very high range of rise as well in the same timeframe. The statistics said, the number of vehicles, which were 58,581 in the year 2001, goes up 66,507 in the year 2002. Gradually the increasing trend for number of vehicles has been continue in the year 2010 it stand 1,60,119 vehicles. But in the year 2011 it abruptly rise to 2, 10,331 vehicles and in the year 2012 it stand at 2, 60,227 vehicles across Tripura.
