Indigenous language education faces crisis

Agartala, September 18 (TIWN): No funds were approved from the state government for publication of books in Kokborok language from the first to eighth standard in the current academic year, official sources said.

A highly placed source in the SCERT said that no funds were approved till the end of July. The government resolved to published revised versions of Kokborok books for students from ninth to twelfth standard in 2013-2014 with an initial fund sanction of Rs. 1.51 lakhs. The government has already sanctioned Rs. 2 lakhs this year as extended investment in Kokborok education.

The source, however, said that no fund sanction was communicated to the SCERT for publishing Kokborok books from first to eighth standard till end of July.

The entire fund for development of Kokborok language since 2012-2013 in Tripura came from the 13th Finance Commission awards as a part of the Commission’s mandate to development indigenous language and cultures.

The government started imparting traditional cultural education in Halam languages from 2013 to develop the indigenous linguistic knowledge base of the state. The government is yet to finalize parameters to choose experts of Halam languages to be inducted for teaching the languages under Halam community.

Tripura has got language development advisory committees to work on Chakma, Mog, Halam, Bishnupriya-Manipuri, Kuki-Mizo, Manipuri languages as well.
