AGARTALA, Aug 27 (TIWN): Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb has talked straight and tough as the Reang refugees known as Brus had upset Mizoram Govt officials on Saturday by not going with them.
On Saturday Mizoram Govt officials after being rejected with Reang repatriation process by the refugees, they left Tripura saying 'will not come back further' with this issue.
The whole planning of repatriation was cancelled after refugees denied to 'go back'.
Chief Minister Biplab Deb has suspected 'intrigue' behind it and advised the Reangs that they should not destroy their children's future with uncertainty.
Addressing media, Chief Minister Biplab Deb said, "Central Govt has offered a good package for them (refugees). Tripura Govt has completed its own work and SDM and BDOs have finished the paper works. It has been known that 450 families are ready to go but the rest of the families are not ready to go".
"It's never possible that they (Reang refugees) will get residentship in Tripura", CM added.
"Tripura's resident is not possible for them. As a result their children's futures are getting spoiled. At Mizoram they have been given proper shelter and all facilities and Central Govt will fully monitor the matters. So I hope, they understand the issue and will not allow their children's futures to be spoiled", CM told media.
The 32,876 Reang tribals, locally known as "Bru", have been living in six makeshift camps in north Tripura's Kanchanpur and Panisagar sub-divisions, adjoining Mizoram, for the past 21 years. They had fled their homes in western Mizoram following ethnic strife. The trouble in the state started after a Mizoforest official was killed.
After a series of meetings, the representatives of the Tripura, Mizoram governments, Union Home Ministry officials and the MBDPF signed an agreement on July 3 in New Delhi. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and his Mizoram counterpart Lal Thanhawlawere also present in the meeting.
As per the agreement, the refugees, comprising 5,407 families, would start returning to their homes from August 16. The multi-phase repatriation would be completed by September 30.
After their return, the Reang tribals would be settled in three districts -- Kolasib, Lunglei and Mamit -- in western Mizoram where they lived.
The agreement has finalised a six-point benefit package for each refugee family. It includes financial aid of Rs 4 lakh; a monthly allowance of Rs 5,000; Rs 1.5 lakh for building a house and free rations for two years.
But crossing the deadline, Reangs have denied to 'go back'.
