Agartala, Sep 11 (TIWN): At a time when the entire state stares at power deficit, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has finally started process to hike power tariff by 14.28 percent, said official sources.

TSECL authority has already submitted Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) before Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) seeking hike in the existing power tariff. An average 14.28 percent hike has been sought in the ARR supposed to come into effect from April 2014.

In the ARR, it was stated that the expected income under the current tariff would generate Rs 510.34 crore (Rs 470.34 cr - Rs 40 cr) for the year 2014-15 FY. And, the expected income of the TSECL would be Rs 583.24 crore without subsidy for the 2014-15 FY if tariff is increased as per the ARR.

In the ARR, the TSECL reasoned increase in power purchase cost which is governed by CERC regulations, increase in the employee cost, other operational and maintenance expenses, hike in the price of natural gas and short term purchase from power exchange. Objections and comments, if any, may be submitted to the Secretary of TERC by Oct 05 next.

After receiving the ARR, the TERC would conduct a public hearing before finalizing the power tariff for the year 2014-15 FY. The TSECL is supposed to submit ARR in March seeking hike in the existing power tariff but it could not due to the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls.

Even as the process has got delayed due to back to back elections, the revised power tariff would come into effect from April 2014, according to sources. The financial health of the corporation has been worsening for the past few years due to various factors, said TSECL sources. Increasingly, there is no visible move to revamp the TSECL by taking realistic steps.
